Description

This professional learning series introduces educators to the principles and indicators of successful Native literacy instruction as outlined in the newly released OSPI Native Literacy Guidance (2026). As one of Washington State’s most recent literacy resources, this guidance provides a timely framework for strengthening culturally sustaining and equity centered literacy instruction.

Through 6 interactive Zoom sessions, educators will explore literacy as a relational, cultural, and identity rooted practice and examine how instructional decisions can honor Indigenous knowledge systems while strengthening literacy outcomes for all students. Participants will engage with Native Literacy Practices that emphasize belonging, storytelling, oral language development, strength based assessment, representation, and criticality.

Sessions are grounded in structured reflection, collaborative dialogue, and guided analysis of instructional practices aligned to Washington State standards and culturally sustaining principles.

This series is designed for classroom teachers, specialists, instructional coaches, and educational leaders across grade levels and content areas.
