As indicated in another online course, Literacy Strategies: Improving Comprehension, the importance of knowing how to read can be summed up very simply: We must know how to read if we want to succeed in school and in life. Although this course doesn't endorse any single approach to reading instruction, it is designed, instead, to share some strategies that have been effective in helping students learn to read, including defining phonemic awareness and phonics. We will isolate the strategies so that we can fully explore them, but remember that the strategies should be one part of a broader approach to teaching reading.
