Mike Flynn: Moving Beyond Answer-Getting in Mathematics
- Mike Flynn
The Standards for Mathematical Practice are an integral part of a student-centered classroom, but what do they look like in action? In this highly interactive session, participants will engage in the practices as learners to experience these ways of doing mathematics firsthand. We will then consider how these same practices can come to life in classrooms, and how teachers can develop richer and more meaningful mathematical experiences for their students. Special emphasis will be on developing a deeper understanding of what it means to reason abstractly and quantitatively (MP2), model with mathematics (MP4), look for and make use of structure (MP7), and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning (MP8). Participants will leave with structures and routines to engage their own students in the mathematical practices, inviting greater interest and curiosity in mathematics.
