Description

The Regional Safety Center at NEWESD 101 recognizes that for students to succeed academically, they need to have safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments where their needs are met. Our communities, families, staff, and students face ongoing and new challenges that impact student success.

The purpose of this conference is to unite professionals in the field of education, public health, law enforcement, and behavioral health to expand the awareness and implementation of best practices and recommendations in threat assessment, school safety, trauma-informed services, and mental/behavioral health resources. Participants will leave with actionable strategies and enhanced professional knowledge in the pursuit of safer, healthier schools and communities. *Registration fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch each day (August 1 & 2)

Day Two:  John P. Skillestad, Supervisory Special Agent

FBIHQ - Office of Partner Engagement
Violence Reduction Unit  Active Shooter Program

"Targeted Violence in Schools: Prevention, Mitigation, Response, Recovery, and Lessons Learned"
With the number of active shooter incidents increasing and other violent crimes occurring in educational settings, schools need to focus on the safety and security of students, staff, and the public. This presentation will focus on the importance of training school personnel and safety staff on how to protect themselves and students from those looking to cause harm. The need to develop personal safety plans and the importance of initiating threat assessment teams to evaluate concerns will be highlighted, in addition to emphasizing the important role that behavioral health plays in the prevention, intervention, response and recovery of targeted violence.

Attendees will gain insight regarding active shooters, and the dangers they pose. The presentation will address the history of, and rise in, active shooter incidents over the years, lessons learned regarding how law enforcement (LE) responds and key concepts in the areas of planning and preparedness, prevention, response, reunification, and recovery.

Prevention is key to combating active shooter and other incidents of targeted violence, which can be accomplished through community awareness, reporting methods, (See something, Say Something, Do Something) and options-based responses (Run, Hide, Fight concepts). Leading practices will be shared to support plan development, including situational awareness, to better prepare for potential targeted violence, and to reinforce engagement between schools and LE partners. The presentation will stress the importance of developing threat assessment teams and employing them when persons of concern are identified. The presentation stresses first responder roles in helping communities recover, reunify, and establish “new” norms after an incident. The audience will leave equipped with the knowledge and insight necessary to prevent, mitigate, and respond to active shooter incidents. In addition, the FBI will share active shooters resources and materials (i.e., studies, reports, documentaries, etc.) used to mitigate public risks.
