Description

Book Study, Overcoming Dyslexia - Second Edition

By Sally Shaywitz, M.D. and Jonathan Shaywitz, M.D.

This Second Edition of Overcoming Dyslexia is even better than the First! It is the go-to book for the most recent evidence-based information on the why, what and how of dyslexia. The authors do an amazing job making the information user-friendly so that educators as well as parents learn to recognize the characteristics of dyslexia and come up with a plan to effectively deal with it in a positive way. The preservation of self-esteem is at the core of all of the strategies discussed and while the problems associated with dyslexia are shared in a straight-forward and scientific way, common strengths of dyslexics are also considered so that they learn to progress through life in a meaningful way. All age-groups are considered, from birth to beyond college. I highly recommend this book to any educator looking to understand and address this reading disorder which affects approximately one in five children.

This course is renewed on a yearly basis.

Agenda

  1. Purchase and read Overcoming Dyslexia - Second Edition By Sally Shaywitz, M.D. and Jonathan Shaywitz, M.D.
You can find this book at amazon.com or your favorite bookstore.

2) Write complete answers to all of the questions on the Book Study Handout. The handout is provided to you after registration is completed.

3) Design a school that addresses the needs of dyslexic learners. Take a close look at chapter 24 in the text, and write a 2-3 page paper where you detail the specific components of what your ideal school will look like. Be specific about why you chose to include certain components in your school. For example, if one of your components is a low student to teacher ratio, then discuss the rationale for that decision. Do not let funds get in the way of the design of your school. Your assignment is to incorporate and discuss at least three important components of the design of your school that will effectively meet the needs of dyslexics.
