Description

Break down digital barriers and promote equitable access to education—no matter your role in a K–12 setting. This course centers accessibility as a key component of educational equity, empowering participants to create inclusive digital communications that reflect the diverse needs of students, families, and colleagues.

Through practical, hands-on modules, participants will:

  • Deepen their understanding of how digital accessibility relates to equity, inclusion, and social justice in K–12 schools.

  • Explore the lived experiences of students and families who rely on assistive technology and inclusive design.

  • Examine how bias can unintentionally show up in digital formats—and how to design with empathy and clarity.

  • Learn to use tools like Grackle, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and accessibility checkers to reduce barriers for learners with disabilities and multilingual needs.

  • Practice applying accessibility principles to documents, slides, PDFs, and online communication.

Note: Some activities reference Adobe Acrobat Pro. While having a paid license is helpful for exploring full PDF accessibility features, it is not required. Alternate tools and instructions are provided so all participants can fully engage in the course.

Participants will leave with actionable strategies for creating content that welcomes every member of the school community—especially those historically marginalized or underserved in digital spaces.

This course can be taken as part of the 70 clock hours required for the General Paraeducator Certificate. It also meets the Advanced Paraeducator Certificate requirements. For more information please refer to the PESB Website
