Description

Build Thinkers, Not Memorizers

A free 3-day summit for elementary teachers who want students who can think, reason, and explain - not just recall steps.  Structured around three days: Think, Share, Connect.

You didn't get into teaching to produce kids who can execute steps without knowing why they work.  You wanted to build thinkers!  Kids who can look at a problem, reason through it, and explain what they did and why.

The reality of it is a lot harder than what we've read about.  It's knowing exactly how to structure your math time to make room for it...what to watch for, what to ask, when to step back and when to step in.

And here's the part that stops a lot of great teachers before they start: you also have a pacing guide, a required curriculum, and real pressure to keep moving. This summit isn't asking you to set any of that aside. Every session gives you moves that fit inside the structure you already have to work in, not instead of it.

Summit Day 1 -THINK (Monday, Aug. 10)

Day 1 is all about centering student thinking as the focus in math. How to build real, visible student thinking into the time you already have, without extra prep or slowing down your pacing. On Day 1, you'll learn:

  • How to choose (or adapt) tasks that actually let students think
  • What to do when the temptation to "just show them" hits and how to hold back
  • Student and teacher beliefs that impact thinking (math trauma, math anxierty, etc)

Summit Day 2 - SHARE (Tuesday, Aug.11)

Once students are thinking, they need to be able to share that thinking - with you, with each other, out loud, on paper, with models to actually find out what kids know.  On Day 2, you'll learn:

  • Why the time you "lose" letting kids share is actually the time you gain
  • How to run whole-group sharing so it doesn't devolve into a 45 minute sharing session
  • What models actually help students share thinking

Summit Day 3 - CONNECT (Wednesday, Aug. 12)

Math has been isolated in so many ways, it's time to focus on the connectedness. We're looking at  how today's thinking becomes tomorrow's understanding, instead of one-off "aha" moments.  On Day 3, you'll learn:

  • How to help students see math as a web of connected ideas, not a list of separate skills
  • How to build the community connections
  • What it looks like when a student starts to feel like math belongs to them
