Description
Fluency is explicitly called out and defined in the 2026 revised mathematics standards. But fluency is more than memorizing facts or racing toward correct answers. Fluency grows from students’ ability to make sense of numbers, choose efficient strategies, and reason flexibly.
When we give students the tools to understand and work with numbers, we open the door to greater mathematical confidence, agency, and access for every learner.
Join us for a K–8 session focused on the “hidden” fluency and numeracy skills that must develop before true fluency can begin. Together, we’ll move beyond the what of basic facts and explore the how of early mathematical reasoning.
Participants will:
- Explore the progression of mathematical fluency and the foundational skills that support it.
- Identify the numeracy and reasoning skills students need before fluency can develop.
- Experience intentional routines, activities, and games that build flexible and strategic thinking.
- Consider ways to create math blocks where students are making sense of mathematics—not simply memorizing procedures.
- Strengthen practices that foster agency, confidence, curiosity, and mathematical reasoning for all learners.
Fluency is a journey, not a race. Come learn alongside your colleagues and discover practical ways to ensure every student has meaningful opportunities to become a confident, curious, and capable mathematician.
The day will include a 60 minute lunch break, where lunch is included with registration for this event.
