Description
Gravity does not differentiate between a living being and an inanimate object. Both can fall when proper care is not taken to keep them from being harmed or causing harm. A 220-pound weight which falls only 4’ can strike the ground with more than 3000 pounds of force. A 1 pound wrench can impact with 177 pounds of force after only a 50’ drop.
Jim Woodfin, Department of Labor & Industries Safety and Health Consultant, will review WAC 296-155-C1 – Fall Protection Regulatory Requirements in Construction which apply to schools in Washington State.
John Hartnett, 3M® Fall Protection Specialist, will provide a hands-on fall protection demonstration addressing proper harness inspection and fit, proper lanyard selection, use and fall clearance. Fall forces and mitigation of those forces as well as anchorage points will be discussed. In addition, drop forces, injury statistics, culture and drop prevention solutions will also be addressed.
Custodians and janitors have a physical job and a high rate of musculoskeletal injury. Dr. Milek will present the findings of a Participatory Ergonomics Research Project, funded by a Safety and Health Investment Project (SHIP) grant from the Department of Labor & Industries involving custodians from the U of W Facilities Department. Using a set of surveys, custodial tasks contributing to discomfort experienced by custodians were identified. The engagement of custodians working together with managers and health and safety personnel to address high discomfort tasks led to reductions in reported discomfort as well as development of a more robust and participatory ergonomic safety program.
Chris Saffell, Ryan, Saffel & Associates, Inc., will demonstrate how to properly fit the harnesses of a backpack vacuum to the person and address vacuum cleaner inspection/maintenance tips and other ergonomic cleaning tools which can help prevent musculoskeletal discomfort and injuries.
