Fluency Fest 2025
Fluency Fest 2025
K-12 Fluency: A Math Festival!
Presenters
- Jennifer Bay-Williams
Description
Fluency in mathematics is a decision-making process: as you look at a problem, certain strategies make the most sense. Fluency in mathematics is about having flexibility and efficiency in solving problems and getting accurate answers. In our updated and revised standards Mathematical Fluency is a focus in K-12. Being Fluent in Mathematics is an equity issue! All students can develop procedural fluency. To ensure every student develops fluency we must first:
- Understand what procedural fluency is (and isn't).
- Respect fluency, and
- Plan to explicitly teach and assess fluency.
Do we know what real fluency looks and sounds like in our teaching practice? How do we accurately capture student growth as learners become engaged in learning focused on fluency?
Join with your colleagues in focusing on fluency in the mathematics you teach, whether that is in primary grades or you teach HS algebra and geometry. We’ll dig into strategy progressions, consider how to assess true fluency, and explore how to address enrichment and intervention in Tier I, II, and III instruction.
This ongoing professional learning is based on the anchor book, Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning by Jennifer Bay Williams and John SanGiovanni along with the classroom companion books and resources that will be used in breakout sessions. A copy of a classroom companion book will be provided for each participant based on their breakout session selection.

Event Notes
This professional learning is targeted for teachers, admin, coaches, and others interested in deepening their understanding of mathematical fluency and facilitating learning focused on mathematical fluency. Basic understanding of what mathematical fluency is helpful, but not required. A foundational source for this understanding is Figuring Out Fluency in Mathematics Teaching and Learning by Jennifer Bay Williams and John SanGiovanni.
This professional learning will focus on strategy use that enables learners at every age and stage to use strategies efficiently and flexibly as they reason mathematically and solve problems accurately.
