Description

This 4-hour interactive workshop (two 2-hour sessions via synchronous Zoom) helps educators design NGSS-aligned 3D formative assessments by integrating generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) with the Next Generation Science Assessment (NGSA) Design Framework.

Led by an interdisciplinary team from WSU specializing in science education, formative assessment, and AI ethics, the workshop content is organized into two modules:

Foundations of AI Literacy
Participants will gain a practical introduction to large language models (LLMs), learn how generative AI tools function, and examine their instructional potential and ethical considerations in K–12 settings. (Breakout rooms will be differentiated to provide additional supports based on participant experience levels with AI.)

Hands-On Co-Design of 3D Assessments
Educators will work collaboratively to design NGSS-aligned 3D assessment tasks using a customized, domain-specific GPT platform. Participants will explore how AI can support task adaptation, question generation, and feedback design.
Completion Deadline: Participants must attend the full FOUR hours (BOTH 2-hour workshops) to receive clock hours.
Required Materials: Laptop or tablet with internet access. Phones will not be adequate. All digital materials and tools will be provided.

Event Notes

Participants must attend the two sessions via Zoom (synchronous).

**Participants attending via Zoom will be required to:

  • Join using their full name
  • Keep their camera on when possible
  • Actively participate in discussions and co-design activities
  • Complete the final reflection and task submission at the end of the session**

This interactive workshop introduces educators to practical and responsible uses of generative AI for NGSS-aligned 3D formative assessment design. Participants will leave with ready-to-use assessment tasks, hands-on experience with a domain-specific GPT tool, and foundational AI literacy that supports effective and ethical classroom use. The session is offered only via a Zoom option.
