Description
With updated mathematics standards, WA Math 2025, now is the time to consider the landscape of mathematics teaching and learning in ways that have students engaged and thinking.
Thin-slicing is the intentional sequencing of tasks to maintain the critical balance between challenge and ability, creating access for all learners while covering substantial mathematics content. In this session, participants will unpack the why (theory) and how (practicalities) of thin-slicing. Through hands-on design work, educators will collaboratively thin-slice a curricular topic exploring how sequencing builds understanding, maintains flow, and deepens engagement. Participants leave with parctical tools for designing efficient, high-impact thinking lessons.
This is not an introduction into Building Thinking Classrooms. It is strongly recommended that you have already participated in an introductory Building Thinking Classrooms professional learning and are prepared to grow your BTC practices.
This professional learning will intertwine with, and make extensive references to the best-selling book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics (Grades K-12): 14 Teaching Practices for Enhancing Learning.
Peter Liljedahl is the author and co-author of the books:
