This fully asynchronous course defines AI literacy and explores strategies for teaching AI literacy in education. The course utilizes two episodes of the education podcast "EdSurge" to study the impacts of AI on student learning and digital literacy. Participants will listen to the podcast episode "Inside the Push to Bring AI Literacy to Schools and Colleges,"Links to an external sit" where host Jeff Young interviews Susan Gonzales, member of President Biden's National AI Advisory Committee and a leader in inclusivity and AI, and Leo Lo, a professor of libraries and learning sciences at the University of New Mexico. Participants will also listen to the podcast episode "How to Help Students Avoid Getting Duped Online - and by AI Chatbots,"Links to an external siwhere host Jeff Young interviews Mike Caulfield, a research scientist at University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public. The podcasts, along with other course readings, offer strategies for developing AI literacy in teachers and students and provides insights into how AI may shape education in the future, including through consideration of the digital divide. Participants will also explore resources for integrating AI literacy into educational settings. Completion of the course offers an opportunity to purchase 5 clock hours in STEM or Equity.
