Description
The Behavioral Health and Prevention Services department presents their 2021 Virtual Student Support Summit Series. Throughout the month of March this hour-long, virtual lunchtime series offers a different theme each week and will occur every Wednesday and Friday, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Week One - Prevention
- Wednesday, March 3rd: Vaping Prevention Toolkit

- Friday, March 5th: What is a Student Assistance Professional?
- What is the Student Assistance Professional program? What can they do and how can a school deliver these services? We'll provide an overview of this multi-tiered approach and explain the range of services available.
Week Two - Threat Assessment
- Wednesday, March 10th: Assessing Risk as We Return to In-Person Learning
- As we return to in-person learning, what are the lasting behavioral and emotional impacts of the pandemic, and how do we best support staff and students? Join us as we discuss ways to mitigate these impacts.
- Friday, March 12th: Equity in Threat Assessment
- We will examine the role of equity in school-based practices to avoid cultural and ethnic disparities in the threat assessment process.
Week Three - Crisis Response and Behavioral Health Navigator
- Wednesday, March 17th: Building a Regional Crisis Response Team
- District and building resources are easily overwhelmed in emergency situations. The NWESD is working to create a coordinated region-wide team that can flex resources to and from neighboring districts to provide more consistent response with less trauma for staff and students. We'll present an overview of what this looks like.
- Friday, March 19th: Introduction to Behavioral Health Navigation and School Mental Health Approaches
- Gain a better understanding of regional behavioral health and suicide prevention efforts. Learn about steps districts and schools can take to integrate behavioral health supports into a multi-tiered system of support.
Week Four - School Discipline
- Wednesday, March 24th: Positive Discipline Interventions
- During this hour we will review the recent changes to school discipline approaches and cover the practical application of interventions and supports for positive discipline.
- Friday, March 26th: Substance Use School Discipline Policies and Practices
- This hour will emphasizes best practices in substance use school discipline policy, systems, communications, and interventions. Participants will learn how to effectively communicate their substance use campus policy, what interventions are appropriate to provide as alternatives to suspensions for substance use violations, the role of law enforcement in substance use violations, and how to effectively address vaping and other substance use on campus
