HB 1214 became a requirement for all SRO/SSOs in 2021. This legislation aimed to improve the quality and transparency of school district safety and security staff programs by implementing additional training designed to ensure schools are places where all youth feel safe. HB 1214 centers racial equity as an essential component of safety and security planning and training, so that school safety and security staff actively contribute to creating a safe environment for youth of color and Black youth in particular.  

All SRO/SSOs must take HB 1214 within six months of hire. This is an ESD-facilitated canvas course that consists of 13 modules that require journal check-ins and on-site training. The training is required and only counts if it is taken through your regional ESD. It must be completed within one school year by receiving a certificate of completion by your ESD.
