Online STEM/Equity/Educational Leadership Canvas Course (2024-25)
Presenters

Description
This fully asynchronous course explores the links between a school pocket forest and STEM learning. The course showcases a successful planting of a pocket forest and gives examples of how to implement a pocket forest on school grounds. The course also offers an opportunity to review the ways that local tribes such as the Yakama have incorporated pocket forests and food programs into the well-being of tribal members and the greater community. Pocket forests are an engaging, hands-on resource that compliments STEM learning and environmental education. Course participants will work at their own pace on Canvas to submit assignments that include exploring learning resources from organizations such as PEI, Grow Plant Tend, SUGi and Since Time Immemorial from OSPI.
The course is designed and written by JoAnn Duncan, an educator with over 20 years of experience, specializing in whole-child education that fosters hands-on, place-based learning. Her commitment to advancing outdoor education has earned her several accolades, including Administrator of the Year and Distinguished Administrator. Under her leadership, her school was honored as the PEI FieldStem School of the Year and recognized as a School on the Rise by the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP).
Deadline: Participants must complete this session in Canvas by September 15, 2025. Completion of the course offers an opportunity to purchase 5 clock hours in STEM, Equity, or Educational Leadership.
