Description

This fully asynchronous course is a book study of the 2024 children's book Sa'le Q'ewet Netse-lh:  Our Hearts Beat as One by Tah-Mahs Ellie Kinley and Julie Trimingham. The book tells the story of the capture of Sk'aliCh'elh-tenaut, an orca whale also known as Lolita or Tokitae, who was kept at SeaWorld in Miami until her death in 2023. Written from the perspective of the Lummi tribe who tried to save her from captivity, the book is a rich resource for incorporating Native American perspectives and history into the classroom. Participants will work at their own pace on Canvas to submit pre-reading assignments, guided reading questions, and a final reflection. Completion of this course offers an opportunity to purchase 5 clock hours in Equity. NWESD 189 is a state approved clock hour provider and clock hours can be used for certificate renewal in Washington State.

Libraries may have the book available to check out, or it is available for purchase as a paperback or hardcopy through the following book sellers:

Deadline:  Participants must complete this session in Canvas by July 15, 2026. Course attendance is taken on an on-going basis after participants finish, often within 3-5 days, though during rush periods and holiday breaks please be aware it may take up to 2 weeks.
