This fully asynchronous course is a book study of the 2024 book The Serviceberry:  Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Botanist Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer. The book looks at the specific plant species the Serviceberry, but more broadly looks at the human relationship to nature. Kimmerer calls for thinking about land and economics through abundance and reciprocity and the gift economy, rather than through scarcity. The book blends insights from ecology and economics with indigenous knowledge and culture. The book is also a call to action to battle climate change and economic inequality through reframing human relationships with land. Participants will work at their own pace on Canvas to submit pre-reading assignments, guided reading questions, and a final reflection where they explore resources for integrating indigenous knowledge and culture into educational settings. Completion of this course offers an opportunity to purchase 10 clock hours in Equity or STEM. NWESD 189 is a state approved clock hour provider and clock hours can be used for certificate renewal in Washington State.
