Description

This fully asynchronous course offers an exclusive opportunity to view Bullfrog Films' "The Salish Sea Trilogy,'" a 3-part series released in 2025 that examines the threats facing Southern Resident Killer Whales and the Chinook salmon they feed on in the Salish Sea. The series examines collaborative efforts between science and indigenous perspectives to try to save orcas and salmon and recover the human toll on the Salish Sea. Viewers learn about the decline of southern resident orcas and Chinook salmon, the impacts on indigenous tribes such as the Lummi, and how indigenous tribes, scientists, and non-profit organizations have been working to save them. Participants will work at their own pace on Canvas to watch the series and answer guided viewing and reflection questions based on the film series and a short reading from Western Washington University's Salish Sea Institute.

Completion of the course offers an opportunity to purchase 5 clock hours in STEM or Equity. NWESD 189 is a state approved clock hour provider and clock hours can be used for certificate renewal in Washington State.

Deadline:  Participants must complete this session in Canvas by July 15, 2026. Course attendance is taken on an on-going basis after participants finish, often within 3-5 days, though during rush periods and holiday breaks please be aware it may take up to 2 weeks.
