Arguing from Evidence Across the K-12 Curriculum

Math, Science, ELA, Engineering, and MORE! (QVSD Hosted Event)

Sat, March 28 2020 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Event Cancelled

Greetings, Colleagues! Due to the rapidly evolving situation and school cancellations, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel the Claims/Evidence/Reasoning Workshop scheduled for Saturday, March 28th at the Forks High School. Here are a few important points: • We may reschedule this event once the landscape and timeline of the situation become clearer. If we are able to reschedule, you will be notified and have the opportunity to register before new participants are allowed to register. • We are currently considering what existing workshops we can move to an on-line format and what new STEM learning opportunities we can offer in an on-line format to help meet your needs in these unprecedented conditions. Please stay tuned to your emails and www.oesd114.org/stem. • We know that many teachers are anxious about completing clock hours due to recertification. Yesterday, it was announced that teachers whose certificates expire in June 2020 have an automatic extension until June 2021. Details can be found here: https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/WAOSPI/bulletins/28188b3 If you have any questions, please reach out at any time. Kim Weaver STEM Coordinator kweaver@oesd114.org

Description

Arguing from evidence is an important practice in:

  • The Next Generation Science Standards, Science and Engineering Practice 6 (Constructing explanations and designing solutions) and Practice 7 (Engage in argument from evidence)
  • The Common Core State Standards in Mathematics Practice 3 (Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others)
  • The Common Core State Standards in ELA, ELPD Framework Practices 1 and 3 (Support analysis with evidence and Construct viable and valid arguments from evidence and critique the reasoning of others.)

This workshop will focus on strategies and structures for developing students in this vital practice.  Grade-level appropriate examples for K-12, templates, and discussion techniques will be explored.  The day will include time for teachers to plan ways to incorporate this practice into their own classrooms.
