Description
Teaching reading can be intimidating and nuanced; however, student reading gaps are increasingly becoming wider, and we are all becoming more aware of reading as an equity issue. Teaching reading is urgent and necessary. As teachers of varying grade levels and subject areas, how do we begin? Where do we start? Intentional vocabulary instruction is a concrete way to help students access texts and tasks, no matter the subject or grade level. We can all help students read.
These sessions will aim to address questions like how can we begin explicit vocabulary instruction? How can students take ownership of their vocabulary building? How can vocabulary instruction be dynamic and contextualize within content learning? Though we will lightly touch on theory and research, these sessions prioritize concrete processes and instructional strategies. Instructional examples will be pulled from secondary ELA, Science and History classrooms, though these strategies can be transferred to all content and grade levels.
Participants can earn an additional 1 clock hour for completing asynchronous work between sessions. Upon completion of the course, participants will be given the opportunity for continued collaboration through classroom coaching and planning support.
