STEM Seminar: The Story of Water

STEM Seminar: The Story of Water

Thu, March 3 4:00 PM - Thu, April 14 2022 5:30 PM

Presenters

  • Becky Bronstein
  • Dr. Kat Huybers

Description

Come learn with EarthGen in this virtual professional development opportunity designed for teachers in ESD 114. Teachers will explore the complex challenges exacerbated by climate change to our water systems, such as water use, water supply, and seasonality of water and what actions they can take with their students. Through asynchronous and synchronous learning, participants will have a chance to authentically engage with activities and experts as they grow their understanding of how climate change has and will impact their community. Analyze and interpret recent climate science data with Dr. Kat Huybers, a climate scientist and lecturer from the University of Washington.

Teachers will leave this training with increased preparedness to facilitate climate science-focused activities using the science & engineering practices of developing and using models, analyzing and interpreting data and constructing explanations and designing solutions. Teachers will learn from professionals in their region who are doing work to combat this climate change impact in an effort to prepare them with resources to spur action.

Teachers will receive a $150 stipend from the ESD upon completion of the entire 10 hour STEM Seminar experience, along with 10 STEM Clock Hours provided by EarthGen.

Teachers must attend all synchronous Zoom sessions and complete all asynchronous work to receive their stipend and clock hours. Teachers will have one week after the final session to complete all asynchronous work, before clock hours and stipends are processed.

Clock Hours: 10 STEM Clock Hours provided by EarthGen. EarthGen does not have access to pdEnroller so teachers’ clock hours will not show up via this platform. Teachers will receive a form at the end of the professional development experience. Teachers can input this information directly to their E-Certification platform.

Teachers can pay Olympic ESD a $3.00 processing fee to add these clock hours to their transcript to avoid manual input to OSPI/e-cert.

Note: By participating in EarthGen’s professional development, teachers opt in to receive newsletters, event updates, and general information. Please let an EarthGen staff person know at the training if you would not like to be added to the mailing list.

Learning Targets:

  1. Develop teachers’ understanding of global climate change and its local impacts.

  2. Demonstrate NGSS and Ambitious Science Teaching (AST) core practices

    1. Targeted Science & Engineering Practices:

      1. Developing and Using Models

      2. Analyzing and Interpreting Data

      3. Constructing Explanations

    2. Tracking student understanding (i.e. Models)

    3. Engaging in student discourse

    4. Develop explanations and design solutions

  3. Prepare teachers to plan and implement a teaching strategy, activity, or content area at school with students.

  4. Teachers will plan for and/or practice a strategy or bring a content-specific topic to their students and will share out at a follow-up session.
