This workshop is designed for K-12 educators who work with multilingual learners in any context. This workshop will focus on the essential question: How can I set up routines and learning activities that promote the use of home languages in my classroom? Participants will engage in five modules that include readings, videos, and activities to try with students. Educators will select ideas to try out in their classrooms and are encouraged to form a professional learning community or share their learning with colleagues. Modules 1-5 contain the following guiding questions that support participants in responding to the essential question: 

1. What are some warm-up activities to bring home languages into my classroom? 

2. How can I leverage the use of home languages when studying vocabulary? 

3. How can I structure learning activities that require two or more languages, even if I am not in a bilingual school? 

4. How can I help learners reflect upon their own bilingualism? 

5. How can I encourage conversations about the language use of our students, families and communities?

Note:  While WIDA states that it takes 20 hours to complete this course, completion data shows that participants complete this course at a much faster rate.  Therefore, only 5 clock hours will be awarded for this course.

This course is open to K-12 Washington public school educators only.   Private schools who have opted into Federal Title III services may also take this course.  Contact your school administrator for details.

Washington State public school educators and approved private school educators  access the WIDA Self- Paced Workshops via the WIDA Secure Portal.

 If you do not have a WIDA Secure Portal account, follow the steps below:

1. Use your district email address and email WIDA Client Services Center at help@wida.us and ask for access to the WIDA Secure Portal.
2. WIDA will send you an access link within 24 hours. Set up your login username and password.
3. Access the WIDA Secure Portal.
4. Select the “Professional Learning” path.
5. Scroll to the Self-Paced Workshop tile and click on the course link 
6. Select the course and begin.
7. Finish the course and download the WIDA course completion certificate for your records.

Get clock hours:

1. Complete course survey in pdEnroller: Login to your pdEnroller account, go to your Events, click on this event, then go to the Clock Hour Checklist and take the survey. 
2. OSPI will download course completion reports from the WIDA Secure Portal monthly to verify course completion.    
3. Clock hours will be processed by the 15^th day of the month following course completion.
