Description
This BEST Extended Learning course is intended for school counselor mentor development. Course curriculum focuses on building mentoring skills in school counseling standards, frameworks, and mentee support using didactic content, coaching conversations, and tools. This includes:
- Building upon mentoring skills: transferable knowledge and skills for school counselor mentoring, arc of the year planning, consultation, and coaching conversations
- Contextualized resource sharing for school counselors
Open to all School Counselors interested in mentoring: The course content applies to any school counselor interested in developing mentoring skills, whether or not they currently serve in a formal mentor role, and all are welcome to enroll.
Beginning Educator Support Team (BEST) supports novice school counselors in WA State through school counselor mentoring, an element of comprehensive induction, and through the development and support of school counselor mentors. The student-centered goal is to improve equitable access to high-quality education for all WA State students through novice school counselor retention and support.
Intended Outcomes:
School Counselors will believe in their ability to serve as mentors to beginning school counselors
School Counselors will receive resources specific to their role as a mentor
School counselors will understand the connection between their role as mentor and positive impact on student outcomes
Event Notes
- BEST promotes a learning progression that is coherent to mentors. Mentor Academy 101 or Nakia Academy are foundational learning experiences with essential flow and connections for our Extended Learning. Mentors may experience gaps in learning and knowledge building if they did not complete a foundational learning before the extended learning. It is recommended that mentors take Mentor Academy 101 or Nakia Academy before they take any Extended Learning.
- BEST’s on-line events are interactive trainings, not webinars. We ask participants to use video when possible so that others can see and interact with them. It is possible to call in and join without video, if necessary. In all cases, participants are asked to participate in all activities via audio.
- Accommodations for Persons with Disabilities: To arrange accommodations for persons with disabilities, please contact BEST at 360-725-6430, TTY (360) 664-3631 or by email, BEST@k12.wa.us within 3 weeks of this event. Please note that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) does not require OSPI to take any action that would fundamentally alter the nature of its programs or services, or impose an undue financial or administrative burden.
