The Why and What of Social Studies
Presenters
- Dr. Terry Beck
- Andrew Miller
Description
In most elementary classrooms, Social Studies warms the bench while the other subjects take the court. If there is time and test scores allow, Social Studies is given a chance to play. Yet, Social Studies must be more than a back-up in elementary schools. Social Studies is basic to the civic mission of schools and students and our society benefit when educators recognize and act upon this fact. Getting Social Studies back in the game starts with a well-developed understanding of why Social Studies in important and what it means to teach Social Studies.
In this webinar, Dr. Terence Beck explores why Social Studies is essential and what the defining characteristics of Social Studies are in an elementary setting. The webinar will be particularly helpful to teachers who want to move toward teaching more Social Studies and to educators who hope to influence their schools, districts, and State Education Tribal Compacts (STECs) to dedicate more time and resources to Social Studies teaching.
