Description

“Little Rabbit” is a traditional Native story of how the power of an individual voice, sometimes in the face of impossible odds, can make a difference. It shows how what’s in your heart is what can lead you to make change where you see it needs to be made in your school, community, reservation, state, country, or even world. It models a character who chooses to speak out, and persists, even in the face of oppression and opposition. Students experience a retelling of the story Little Rabbit and reflect on their own personal connections to it. Students learn about the history of Indian resistance events and justice movements, with a focus on youth, the self-determination era, and Standing Rock. Students use Theatre of the Oppressed methods to explore different forms of social activism by looking at people engaged in this work through photos and images. Students consider issues in their own lives where they want to see change, and possible action they could take to make their voices heard around these issues. They create protest signs for their chosen issue, and try on the role of activist by sharing their signs through physical poses or by speaking out.
