Description

About the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program: This training is for school staff who are considering implementing a Suicide Prevention Program in their schools. The SOS program offers evidence-based curriculum and screening tools to proactively address youth suicide and decrease risk in addition to meeting the requirements for ESA certification.

This award winning, evidence-based suicide prevention program teaches students how to identify signs and symptoms of depression in themselves and their friends, and how to respond effectively. This program teaches peer to peer messaging using the ACT acronym: Acknowledge that there may be an issue, let your friend know that you Care, and Tell a trusted adult. It includes a student screening component with school and district guidelines for processing and responding to questionnaires. The PSESD is adding a section to SOS on developing schoolwide plans to support compliance with RCW28A.320.127.

Important Note:  This course meets the new Washington State requirement that school counselors, psychologists, social workers, and nurses complete a training program in youth suicide screening and referral as a condition of certification as well as compliance with RCW28A.320.127.

Training Objectives:

  • Learn how to identify signs and symptoms of depression and suicide in youth
  • How to respond effectively using school policy
  • How to engage community as partners in prevention
  • Learn the components of the comprehensive SOS suicide prevention program for schools: student and stakeholder education, screenings and intervention
