Description

The R.I.S.E. Summer Assembly is a transformative two-day gathering that brings together a community of educators committed to justice, collective care, and the reimagining of teaching and learning. This institute is more than professional development, it is a space for building a network of educators who are called to enact justice-centered, culturally sustaining practices and who are deeply committed to radically caring for students, families, and communities.

Building on the foundation of previous R.I.S.E. convenings, this year’s institute expands to include educators across science, mathematics, and English language arts in alignment with Washington State’s newly revised learning standards. Together, participants will explore cross-disciplinary approaches that center identity, community, and real-world relevance, while challenging traditional boundaries of instruction.

Grounded in NASEM equity frameworks, Indigenous science perspectives, and educational values that honor relationality, reciprocity, and connection to land and community, the assembly will support educators in designing meaningful and consequential learning experiences. Participants will engage in collaborative inquiry with university partners, community organizations, and fellow educators to deepen their understanding of justice-centered pedagogy.

A defining feature of this year’s institute is the presence of the PSESD Youth Wisdom Council, whose members will offer critical insight and lived perspectives on teaching and learning. Their voices will guide and challenge participants to design instruction that is truly responsive to the needs, identities, and aspirations of young people.

In addition, members of Cohort 1 will serve as mentors, along with community based leaders and PSESD content leads, supporting new participants through shared learning, reflection, and collaboration. This intergenerational and cross-cohort model strengthens the R.I.S.E. Network as a living community of practice.

The R.I.S.E. Summer Assembly serves as the launch for the 2026–2027 cohort program, equipping educators with the tools, relationships, and vision needed to develop and implement justice-centered, cross-disciplinary units that are academically rigorous, culturally meaningful, and socially transformative.
