Course Description
What does it take to help English Learners become confident, successful readers? In Bridging Reading Gaps for English Learners, this course provides practical, research-informed strategies for strengthening reading development while honoring students’ linguistic and cultural strengths. Participants explore how language acquisition shapes literacy development and how listening, speaking, reading, and writing work together as students learn to read in a new language.
Educators will learn how to design effective reading instruction that builds foundational literacy skills, vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency, and deep comprehension. The course also examines how screening, diagnostic, and classroom-based assessments can be used to guide instruction and respond to students’ learning needs.
Grounded in culturally responsive and asset-based teaching practices, the course emphasizes the importance of diverse text selection, inclusive classroom environments, and strong family partnerships in supporting literacy development. Participants will leave with practical frameworks and instructional tools to design equitable reading instruction that helps English Learners engage with complex texts and succeed in academic learning.
This course satisfies the WA State Equity requirement for certificate renewal!
